Spanish Food and Restaurant Vocabulary
Few situations are more useful for a traveler than ordering food. This lesson gives you the vocabulary for common dishes and drinks, plus the polite phrases waiters expect to hear.
1. At the table Spanish English el menú the menu la cuenta the bill el camarero / mesero the waiter el plato the dish / plate el tenedor the fork el cuchillo the knife la cuchara the spoon la servilleta the napkin
2. Food and drink Spanish English el agua water el café coffee el pan bread la carne meat el pescado fish el pollo chicken las verduras vegetables la fruta fruit el postre dessert
3. Useful phrases Spanish English Una mesa para dos, por favor. A table for two, please. ¿Qué recomienda? What do you recommend? Para mí, el pollo, por favor. For me, the chicken, please. La cuenta, por favor. The bill, please. Está delicioso. It is delicious.
Good to know
In Spain "camarero" is the standard word for waiter, while much of Latin America says "mesero." Both will be understood anywhere.
